The invitation

Have you wondered what the experience of war is really like, on a deeper human level? Beyond the painful and devastating images we are surrounded with daily, how could it be that the war that breaks the heart can also unwittingly initiate us into a deeper capacity for togetherness, solidarity, and moral imagination that stretches the possibilities for not only ending the war, but for living PEACE?

We invite you to a special and transformative evening at Klustret featuring a documentary screening and deep conversation with ethnographic film-makers from Ukraine Tetiana Staneva and Serhii Zeynalov. Through an experiential process, we will also look “through the war” and its most personal and human aspects, and step into the openings for collective healing and capacity for action.

The event is part of the series Seeing Through The War: Spaces of Pain, Spaces of Healing initiated by the Gergina Foundation and co-missioners.

The process

  • "Heartbeat of humanity" activating practice
  • Screening of the film "SAVE", and a circle with directors Tetiana Staneva and Serhii Zeynalov.

The film is a tale of human courage, love and resilience in the face of adversity, which would allow us to unpack the the Ukrainian concept of Subjektnist -- a deep capacity for collective action for the common good.

  • Expanding the conversation, we will also broach the topics of politics of memory and environmental justice together with guests Dr. Yuliia Yurchuk and Sara Varda St Vincent.

We would explore how war inevitably shapes and changes our relationship to ourselves and the collective, to time and memory. War spells an ending and radically brings us face to face with the fundamentals of impermanence, but also reverence for LIFE. This is so all for all of us - whether we are directly thrown into it or observing from a "distance".  And what may be the task for those of us who live outside the region - to expand the field of love, without avoidance of the very reality of war and "the end of the world as we know it."

  • A transformative ritual practice that support us to move through mourning in order to access deeper understanding and vision.
The process and ritual is designed based on Nonviolent communication (NVC) and social witnessing and ritual work for mourning & renewal, liberating capacity and cultivating moral imagination for how we could not only end war but also live PEACE.

    The film

The documentary film "SAVE" by Serhii Zeinalov, co-directed with Maksym Khotilenko, tells the story of the aftermath of the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.

After the explosion of the Kakhovka Dam, Serhii helplessly watches as the flooded and Russian-occupied Oleshky on the left bank of the Dnipro turn into a watery trap for his grandmother and grandfather. Unable to save them, he picks up the camera to preserve their story in a film.

The film is a powerful tale of the human courage, love, and also suffering. It highlights the heroism of volunteers, ordinary citizens who risk their lives to rescue and evacuate people from the flooded areas. Through a deeply personal tragedy, the filmmakers convey the pain of war, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of humanity in the most challenging moments.

Finally, it raises questions of the ecological impacts of war, as well as the possible social ecological pathways to restoration and peace.

Tetiana Staneva is a documentary filmmaker and correspondent from Ukraine. She is also the organiser and director of the International Ethnographic Film-Festival OKO taking place yearly in Bulgaria and Ukraine since 2020 as a a holiday of ethnographic, anthropological, documentary and other types of films uniting filmmakers with people.
